Martin Parr

I had the privealage of listening to Martin Parr speak at the SPE conference, and he was a riot. Someone who doesn't take himself too seriously, and I really captures some fascinating images. He also manages to have a very large collection of humorous self portraits from all over the globe. He captures images that are often ironic or funny.

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was famous for her photo "Migrant Mother". She was a depression era photographer.

Bruce Davidson

Bruce Davidson photographs, notably those taken in Harlem, New York City, have been widely exhibited and published.

Eve Arnold

Eve Arnold was an American Photo journalist. She is well known for his photographs of Marilyn Monroe, and Malcom X.

Irving Penn

Irving Penn is famous for his portraits, and fashion photography.

Steve McCurry

Famous for his "afghan Girl" photo published in National Geographic, McCurry focuses on the human consequences of war, not only showing what war impresses on the landscape, but rather, on the human face. “Most of my images are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person, a person caught in a broader landscape, that you could call the human condition.”

Richard Sandler

I really couldn't find much information on Richard Sandler, but he is a fascinating street photographer.

Helen Levitt

Helen Levitt was a New York city street photographer, she dropped out of high school, taught herself photography, and become a commercial photographer, and an photography teacher.
She was very private, and shy.

Vivian Maier

I'm obsessed with Vivian Maier's work. Her history so interesting, and some what sad. She was discovered after her death, when her boxes or photos and negatives were sold at an auction. She was an amazing street photographer in the 60s and 70s, traveling all over the place, but she lived in Chicago for quite some time. She never shared her photos with anyone.

This documentary...

This documentary is about 2 talented young men who were in a band together in a community in Texas, where my good friend Rocky lives. She was very good friends with both of them, and is actually in this documentary. (She's the one who mentions that they were riding around on skateboards with shoot guns) The two guys, Frankie and Adam, both committed suicide. This documentary is about them, and to highlight mental health awareness for musicians and artists, with similar baggage as the two featured in this film.

I'm hoping it gets some more funds, so it can be completed and shared with the world. If you're feeling generous, make a donation! :)

I'm baaaaack

Back to school... Back to blogging.

Typically, we're suppose to post about artists and other photographers that inspire us... but what about the ones that inspire us on what NOT to do.

Welcome to:
youarenotaphotographer.com

This is the place where you can be reminded on your bad days, that maybe you aren't such a bad photographer.

This is an entire community of photographers that post the good, the bad and the UGLY. You can also post your own work, to have it critiqued, in a very honest, and often constructive way. I haven't been brave enough to do so...yet.

It is a place to get a few good snickers in, but as a portrait photographer, I often find myself getting angry when I see these people who are down right AWFUL at photography, actually MAKING MONEY off of these poor souls.

I know not every picture I take is perfect. Hell, I feel like I'm lucky if I get 20 good pictures out of a shoot, but these people..... sigh.

Oh well. Check out the site, and enjoy. :)
